Hveravellir in Kjolur

Hveravellir was protected as a natural monument in 1960, and the protection was reviewed in 1975. The area was protected in part because of how unique the geothermal area is and the general opinion that Hveravellir is the location of the most beautiful hot springs in Iceland. The hot springs are considered to be particulary clear, and beautifully coloured patterns can be found in their encrustations. The natural monument is 534 ha in size.
