The Hornstrandir nature preserve was placed under protection in 1975 in accordance with the Nature Conservation Act no. 47/1971 and with a Notice in the Government Gazette no. 366/1975. The protection was revised in 1985 with a Notice no. 332/1985. 

The Hornstrandir Committee is a consulting group for issues pertaining to the nature preserve at Hornstrandir. The remit of the Committee directs it to provide counsel on the issues of the area, construction activity, future policy etc. The Committee consists of representatives nominated by the municipality of Ísafjörður, the Landowners’ Association of Sléttu- and Grunnavíkurhreppur as well as the Environmental Agency. The Hornstrandir nature preserve is under the auspices of the Environmental Agency at Ísafjörður where area experts work all year.
